In an unprecedented move, the state higher education council on Tuesday
decided to hold a common entrance exam for admission to postgraduate
courses across all colleges and universities in Bengal.
In a meeting with controller of examination of all the 14 state
universities and other high
officials on Tuesday, it was proposed that from 2013 the
universities would conduct all their undergraduate part 3 exams between
March 15 and May 15, so the common admission test for admission to
postgraduate courses could be held in June.
It has been proposed that the Higher Education Council will conduct
the common admission test and all state universities and
government-aided colleges will use the score obtained for admission in
their Masters programmes. “Today we got the academic calendar of all
universities. The feedback from all the state is that holding
undergraduate Part 3 exam between March and May isn’t impossible,”
Phalguni Mukherjee, joint secretary of the state higher education
council, told HT.
“We want to hold the entrance exam within three weeks of completion of the undergraduate exam. The level of preparation for undergraduate exams would be enough for students appearing for the admission test,” Mukherjee said.
Considering the fact that the marking pattern of different universities would be different, it has been proposed that all universities would give their marks in percentile format. The same would ensure that the universities are able to consider the marks obtained in Part 3 in the common entrance exam, and also conduct interviews.
“We will now work on these proposals and would convene a meeting with the vice chancellors of all the state universities. By January, the picture would become clearer. And if everything goes according to plan, we hope to hold the common entrance test for admission to Masters courses from 2013,” Mukherjee said.
Once the academic calendar for Part 3 exam is in place, the higher education council would work towards deciding the academic calendar for Part 1 & 2 for undergraduate courses offered by all state universities.
